Creating a visual identity isn't about drawing a logo: it's about building a coherent system of signs (logo, colors, typography, rules) in the service of a brand strategy. Here's the method we use at Maïkkom to create a visual identity in 7 steps, grounded in cognitive design.

1. The strategic brief

Before a single line is drawn, we get clear on the substance: positioning, audience, values, brand personality, competitors. A visual identity gives form to a strategy; without direction, it's mere decoration. This is the step that prevents the "pretty but off-brief" outcome.

2. Research & territory

We explore the visual landscape: references, mood boards, the codes of the sector (to fit within them or deliberately break away). The goal is to define a distinctive, defensible territory of expression — not a trend that will fade.

3. The logo and the symbol

The logo is the linchpin of the system, but it's only one piece of the identity (see what is a visual identity). We design it to work everywhere: at large scale, as a favicon, in monochrome, on light backgrounds and dark.

4. The colors

A palette is never purely aesthetic: colors carry meaning and trigger reactions. We choose primary and secondary colors, with their exact codes (web and print), guided by the psychology of color and the contrast needed for legibility.

5. The typography

We select one or two type families and define the hierarchy (headings, subheadings, body text). Typography carries a large share of a brand's personality — and a large share of its legibility, and therefore of how easily it's understood.

6. The applications and the system

An identity is only worth as much as it holds up across every touchpoint: website, social media, business cards, signage, packaging. We create the applications and check for end-to-end consistency — that consistency is what makes a brand recognizable and memorable.

7. The brand guidelines

Finally, we lock the rules of use into a single document: the brand guidelines. They ensure the identity stays coherent, no matter who picks it up tomorrow (see what brand guidelines include).
